The Last of the Mohicans - James Fenimore Cooper

Autor: James Fenimore Cooper

Número de Páginas: 414

The Last of the Mohicans is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in January 1826.It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time. Its narrative flaws were criticized from the start, and its length and elaborately formal prose style have reduced its appeal to later readers. Regardless, The Last of the Mohicans is widely read in American literature courses. This second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy is the best known. The Pathfinder, written 14 years later in 1840, is its sequel.Cooper named a principal character Uncas after the most famous of the Mohicans. The real Mohicans lived in the colony of Connecticut in the mid-seventeenth century, and not in the New York frontier a century later. Uncas was a Mohegan, not a Mohican, and Cooper's usage has helped to confuse the names of two tribes to the present day. When John Uncas, his last surviving male descendant died in 1842, the Newark Daily Advertiser wrote "Last of the Mohegans Gone" lamenting the extinction of the tribe. The writer was not aware that Mohegans still existed then and to the present day.The story takes place in 1757 during the Seven Years' War (known in America...

James Fenimore Cooper is chiefly known to posterity as the author of The Last of the Mohicans, focussing on the friendship between a Native American chief and a white hunter. Cooper himself acknowledged that it was his Leatherstocking Tales which were the most likely to endure of his work; yet this estimate understates Cooper''s significance as the most prolific and internationally-read American author of the first half of the nineteenth century. Fenimore Cooper developed a distinctive style well adapted to handling frontier, military and nautical romances, which won him great popularity and gave him entry to the leading figures in post-Napoleonic Europe. In consequence he also became one of the most sophisticated political and environmentalist thinkers of his time. His explicitly political writings and politically-involved novels won him both considerable influence and formidable social rejection. His environmental worries, perceptible in many of his works, anticipate today''s concerns. Cooper was also a significant historian, and broke new literary ground in writing a biography of an ordinary sailor when such works were always concerned with the great and the good. The breadth...

The Monikins, by J.(James) Fenimore Cooper a Novel (World's Classics)

Autor: James Fenimore Cooper

Número de Páginas: 222

The Monikins is a 1835 novel, written by James Fenimore Cooper. The novel, a beast fable was written between his composition of two of his more famous novels from the Leatherstocking Tales, The Prairie and The Pathfinder.Critic Christina Starobin compares the novels plot to Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. The novel, narrated by the main character, the English Sir John Goldencalf, is a satirical novel as Goldencalf alongside the American captain Noah Poke, travel on a series of humorous adventures. The novel is not very popular amongst readers of Cooper.A contemporary critic of the novel in The Knickerbocker, described the novel with great disappointment. It is not improbable that some of those who read this book, may feel a wish to know in what manner I became possessed of the manuscript. Such a desire is too just and natural to be thwarted, and the tale shall be told as briefly as possible. During the summer of 1828, while travelling among those valleys of Switzerland which lie between the two great ranges of the Alps, and in which both the Rhone and the Rhine take their rise, I had passed from the sources of the latter to those of the former river, and had reached that basin ...
